The Ho-Chunk Nation hosted the 22nd Annual March
Madness All Native Basketball Tournament at the House of Wellness on March 8,
9, and 10. The event included a Nelson
Funmaker three point shootout, Kuunu Yazzie Slam Dunk contest, Little Hoopsters
games, Hand Drum Contest, Ho-Chunk Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Roberta
Funmaker All-Star Women’s Basketball Tournament, and the All Native Men’s
Basketball Tournament.
The basketball games were also played at the Just a Game
Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells and at the UW Platteville-Baraboo Sauk County
gym. The basketball tournament included
16 men’s teams, 12 women’s teams, and was run on a double elimination format.
The eighth Annual Roberta Funmaker All-Star Women’s Basketball
Tournament winners were in third place the XFactor team, in second place the
Burning Feathers team, and the champions were the Lady Ballers.
The twenty second Annual Ho-Chunk Nation March Madness All
Native Men’s basketball tournament winners were in third place the Eight Clan
team, in second place the Plainzmen, and the champions were Stray Nation.
This year Ho-Chunk Hall of Fame Inductees were Dan Libke –
Boxing, Carlyle Greendeer – Coaching, Gary Thundercloud – Basketball, Kenneth
Funmaker, Jr. – Basketball, Conroy Greendeer, Jr. – Track, Glenn Lonetree –
Rodeo, Norval Lonetree – Stock-Car Racing, Ernie Stevens, Jr. – Boxing, and
Special Recognition went to Johnny Bingo Funmaker – MC.
The next Ho-Chunk March Madness Basketball Tournament is
scheduled for March 7, 8, and 9, 2025.
