Sarah M. Lemieux was sworn in as representative for District 3 Seat 1

By Elijah T. Smith

The Ho-Chunk Nation Election Board hosted an oath of office ceremony on July 17, 2019, at the Tribal Office Building in Black River Falls for the newly elected District 3 Seat 1 Legislator, Sarah M. Lemieux.

Lemieux was elected during the June 22 special run-off election.  The Constitution of the Ho-Chunk Nation states, “Article VIII – Elections, Section 8. Oath of Office. The Election Board shall administer the oath of offices of President, Legislature, and Judiciary on the 4th Wednesday following the election after the Election Board certifies the Election results.”

Therefore, Sarah M. Lemieux was not included in the Oath of Office ceremony held July 2 at Ho-Chunk Gaming - Wisconsin Dells.  Officials sworn in at that time were elected during the June 4 General Election.

Master of Ceremonies was Nathaniel Longtail, Jr. at the Tribal Office Building. Newly elected Ho-Chunk Nation President Marlon WhiteEagle conducted a welcoming address. Post 129 veterans John “JB” Blackdeer and Dave Radtke were present and posted colors for the ceremony. Traditional Chief Clayton Winneshiek offered a prayer.

Election Board Chairperson Libby Fairchild conducted the oath of office to Sarah M. Lemieux.
After the oath, Lemieux took the opportunity to say some words.

The Election Board gifted Lemieux a Pendleton blanket.  An honor song was rendered by the Bearheart drum group, and family and friends joined in the celebration dancing.
