Ho-Chunk Nation Veteran gravesites honored with flags

By Ardith Van Riper

Starting on May 5, volunteers placed flags at the gravesites of Ho-Chunk Nation Veterans at Blue Wing Cemetery.  An additional two days were dedicated to visiting Decorah Cemetery, Indian Mission Church Cemetery, Decorah Prairie Cemetery, and Trempealeau Cemetery.

The Ho-Chunk Nation Veterans Service Office provided cloth face masks and hand sanitizer to volunteers.  Individuals also practiced social distancing.

Stories and memories were shared.  Jim Greendeer communicated a history session while at Blue Wing Cemetery.  Doug Greengrass supervised volunteers while at Decorah Cemetery.
